  • To be the professional body for those specialising in advancing the management and the development of people, recognised as the leading authority and influence in this field.
The CIPD was granted Royal Charter on 1 July 2000. The Charter is the governing document of the CIPD and, together with the Bye-laws, sets out the powers of the Institute. The Charter and Bye-laws also provide for the constitution of the Council, the CIPD's supervisory and advisory body, and the Executive Board which is constituted for the purpose of the management and administration of the property of the CIPD and the conduct of its business.

The CIPD’s Professional Standards cover both generalist and specialist functions of people management and development. They define what a professional should be able to do, or should be able to understand, explain and critically evaluate if he or she is to operate at a support level, at a practitioner level, or at the level of an advanced practitioner. The CIPD has 10 core competencies which are embedded within these standards.

Every CIPD member irrespective of grade of membership should be concerned with the maintenance of good practice within the profession. All members must commit themselves to adhere to this code of professional conduct which sets out the standards of professional behaviour.
